Gimenez speaks with the same passion that infuses his play on the pitch, though he also knows when to listen, as Godin, who is also his team-mate at Atletico Madrid, confirmed: “Josema is a very intelligent kid who keeps his ears open, which is important. He’s got an awful lot going for him and he can get even better yet.
“I’m not going to show him how to play football, but I do try to give him good advice. I can see myself in him, because I also started out very young, and I try to pass on my own experience to him.”
Godin speaks of his colleague as if he were an older brother taking pride in his sibling’s rapid progress. And like any “brother” worth his salt, he also pokes fun at his young sidekick, having this to say about Gimenez recently becoming a father: “The boy’s going to look after him when he grows up.”
“He’s like a father to me on the pitch, a big brother,” commented Gimenez. “He’s the teacher and I’m the student.”
“Me a teacher?” retorted Godin. “No way!”

        Exciting times
Gimenez and Godin are no-nonsense centre-halves, worthy exponents of the gritty footballLa Celestehave become known for over the years.
DiscussingUruguay’s trademarkgarra, Gimenez said: “Your family drums it into you from an early age. They tell you that you have to be a fighter. That’s the way we Uruguayans are.”
Pondering the question of which of them gets worked up most, Gimenez chuckled and replied: “If you ask me, I’d say he does.”
Godin then had his say: “The thing is, we’re both very competitive. Josema is a real fighter too, though from experience I think I’m the one who gets most het up.”
An undisputed first-choice pairing in the centre of theCharrúadefence sinceUruguay’s second group match at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, Godin and Gimenez have a tough assignment ahead of them at the Copa America in Chile, which kicks off on Thursday, namely stopping some of the best strikers in the world.

That task will begin in the group phase, where the Uruguayans will cross swords with Jamaica, Paraguay and old rivals Argentina.
“To my mind, (Lionel) Messi is the hardest forward to mark,” said Gimenez. “He can go either side of you, you don’t know where he’s going to pop up and he can turn on a sixpence and leave you floundering.”
Giving his view on the continental finals, Godin said: “Obviously Argentina, with the likes of Messi, (Angel) Di Maria, (Sergio) Aguero, (Gonzalo) Higuain and (Ezequiel) Lavezzi, have got one of the best front lines. They’re the big favourites if you ask me.
“Every team has come on a lot, though, and Brazil are also big favourites. Chile are the hosts, Colombia have got a great side and we’re the defending champions. We’re going there to do as well as we can.”

LaCelestehead to the Copa America with a somewhat unfamiliar line-up. With Luis Suarez still suspended from international football and veterans Diego Forlan and Diego Lugano no longer part of the set-up, a new breed has broken through, one headed by Diego Rolan and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, both of whom featured with Gimenez in the side that finished runners-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013.
“We’ve lost some very important players, but there are others who’ve come through and have been playing really well for their clubs,” commented Gimenez. “That’s very reassuring to know and it can help us a lot.”
Looking further ahead, Godin said: “There’s a generational handover going on and the Copa America is going to be our first big test, one that will mark the way for the future, because our main objective is the World Cup in Russia.”
Keen students ofUruguay’s history, the central-defensive duo have a warning forLa Celeste’srivals in Chile, however.

“We’re going to do what we’ve always done: keep a low profile and see what happens,” said Gimenez, before Godin added with a mischievous smile: “Uruguayare tough opponents for anyone. There’s no doubt about that.”
