Chocolate is made out of cacao beans. These beans are found in the pods of cacao trees, which are native to South and Central America. However, there are cacao farms in Southeast Asia, Africa, India, and Indonesia.
Some of the first cacao plantations were created by the Mayan people as far back as 500 C.E. They used cacao for buying and trading, much like we use money. Chocolate remained popular even after the Maya civilization fell. The Aztecs, who thrived hundreds of years later, drank a frothy chocolate drink called xocolatl at religious ceremonies.
