Kenny Ortega: I had anxieties about MJ
Friday, February 26 05:05 pm
He is the man who helped Michael Jackson to stage final his final concerts. But Kenny Ortega, the show's creative director and a close friend of MJ, admits he wasn't always sure the King of Pop was up to the challenge of performing them.
"There were days where I had my I anxieties and my insecurities, " said Kenny.
"But Michael made it very evident that this was something he wanted to do and in the end it was about grabbing hold and letting him take the reins - plugging in to his belief."
After his death on June 25th, footage of the singer rehearsing was used to compile the documentary film This Is It - the same name given to his comeback gigs at London's 02, due to begin last July. Kenny directed the feature which made over £170m around the world, despite a limited run in cinemas of just a few weeks.
"When we began this we worked seven days a week continuously until we turned the film over," said Kenny.
"I was just concerned that in the end that it would serve the fans and that was my main motivation in deciding to do the project. The overwhelming support has been incredible."
This Is It has done just as well on DVD. It went straight to the top of the charts on its first day of release.
