A.A. Nikolskii (1976), supposedly recorded the imitation of a spotted deer roar by a tiger, noted that its deliberate use by the predator has not been proved

Some hunters and even zoologists assume
that tigers entice wapiti through such a sound. In India at places where there
are many sambars tigers imitate their call to attract them into ambush (this
        153 opinion requires confirmation).

Hunting Strategy of the Margay (Leopardus wiedii) to Attract the Wild Pied Tamarin (Saguinus bicolor)

Burton (1933), Anderson (1954), Peacock (1933), and others hypothesized that a pooking tiger mimics the alarm note of the sambar in order to attract and capture the deer, but Brander (1923) and Champion (1927) thought it a sex call. The vocalization has been reported in a number of specific circumstances: 1. By a captive while ejecting urine (Boswell, 1957). 2. "Just after a tiger had relieved nature" (Champion, 1927). 3. While walking near kill (Powell, 1957). 4. Just before approaching kill (Anderson, 1954). 5. When disturbed at kill by man (Brander, 1923). 6. On seeing a man sitting in a tree (Perry, 1964). 7. By a male, accompanied by a female, when noting a person climb a tree in the distance (Lewis, 1940). 8. When shot at or disturbed on the kill (Pollock, 1896). 9. When approaching a kill already occupied by another tiger (this study). 10. By a male (?) tiger in response to roar of a tigress at a kill about a quarter-mile away (this study). 11. By a male tiger when approached by a cub as he lay 20 feet from kill (this study).
In these eleven instances, the vocalization is most commonly elicited near a kill, with the animal appearing to draw attention to itself by pooking as it becomes aware that it is approaching, or being approached by, a tiger or a man. This suggests that the sound serves to advertise the animal's presence and prevent sudden encounters. The fact that pooking has also been reported in conjunction with scent-marking and "relieving nature," both advertisement devices, lends support to this contention.
