Stevie and I have always been close because we were in the same agegroup as we worked our way through the Liverpoolacademy. We both joined the club at 10 or 11 and have always shared a bond.We’re not best mates, but we’re close. We played in virtually every teamtogether, whether at Liverpool or withEngland. Whenever I was injured heseemed to be injured too, and we spent a lot of time jogging round pitchestogether, struggling to be fit, discussing medical issues and fantasizing abouta life without lay-offs. As we set off for the World Cup, it hurt me to leavehim behind.
